FAQ Teeth Whitening

FAQ Teeth Whitening

\If I am pregnant or nursing, should I have this treatment?
There is no known hazard associated with whitening teeth while pregnant or nursing. However, consult with your physician and your dentist for more specific recommendations.

Can tooth whitening hurt my teeth?
Substantial clinical and laboratory research has shown that teeth whitening gels have no adverse effects on teeth.

Can tooth whitening hurt my gums?
Teeth whitening gels have no adverse effect and often improve the health of gum tissue.

Are there any side effects?
Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity to hot and cold. This usually occurs in the first week, and will cease to exist when you are not whitening your teeth.

Will this affect my crowns or fillings?
No. Teeth whitening will not affect fillings, crowns or other tooth colored restorations. Occasionally, amalgam fillings may leave a harmless gray residue in your tray.

How is this different from TV and over the-counter products?
Your treatment will be done using custom fitted trays and professional products. Over the counter trays are not snug and cause spotting of your teeth by not allowing the bleach to be evenly distributed over your teeth. Also, some over-the counter products contain harmful acids or abrasives which can damage your teeth or gums.

Why are my teeth whitening unevenly?
If your teeth are whiter along the edges of your teeth, this is due to the enamel being thinner along the edges of your teeth. Continue to whiten your teeth and the part of the tooth where the enamel is thicker will whiten to the same shade as the edges. If you have white round spots on your teeth, these are called calcium deposits. As you whiten your teeth these flare up. Continue to whiten your teeth until the other part of your tooth reaches the color you desire and then discontinue. The calcium deposit will reside after a couple of weeks of not using the product.

What is the difference between laser whitening and custom mouthpieces?
Laser is done by a dentist who applies a 35% Hydrogen Peroxide solution on your teeth. Once this solution is on, a light is held a couple of inches away from your teeth to speed up the chemical reaction of the Hydrogen Peroxide. The only benefit of doing laser whitening is that your teeth become white instantaneously. This procedure cost $400 plus. The problem with this procedure is that after a year of your normal eating habits (drinking coke, tea, coffee, etc.) your teeth become slightly discolored again and develops a new stain. With the laser whitening, you will have to go and pay $400 plus to repeat the procedure. With the custom mouthpieces, you already have the custom mouthpieces that you can wear a year later for a night to take off the new stain at no cost.

The custom mouthpieces get your teeth whiter and for much less. The process is not as instantaneous as laser surgery, but you will achieve the same or better results after 5 - 10 applications.

I live outside of the United States. Can you ship the product to me?
Professional Teeth Whitening gladly ships internationally. When you click order on the order page, it will ask you what level of shipping service you prefer. Select international and your package will take from 4 to 10 days to arrive at your doorstep.

How long does it take to ship and have the mouthpieces made?
An order is processed and shipped the same day the order is made. It depends on the level of shipping service you choose for the product to arrive at your door step (normal shipping takes 2 to 4 days). Once you mail your impressions to the lab, they fabricate the mouthpieces and ship them the same day they receive the impressions. There are no hidden costs!

Are there any side effects?
Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity to hot and cold. This usually occurs in the first week, and cease to exist when you are not whitening your teeth.

My teeth are sensitive, what can I do?
There are 4 things that can be done to help eliminate sensitivity that is caused by whitening your teeth. First, wear the whitener for a shorter period. Second, brush your teeth with Sensodyne toothpaste. Sensodyne toothpaste has a high concentration of potassium nitrate. Potassium nitrate soothes the nerves endings and helps eliminate tooth sensitivity. Third, go to the pharmacist and ask for Gel-Kam. Gel-Kam is a high concentration of fluoride. Fluoride helps re-mineralize your teeth. Wear this in your trays for 4 minutes prior and after whitening your teeth. Fourth, stop whitening your teeth for a couple days so your teeth can adapt to the whitening process. Within 24 hours of whitening your teeth, the sensitivity will cease. The longer you whiten your teeth, the less you will experience sensitivity.

My gums are irritated / burning, what can I do?
This irritation is due to the whitening solution sitting on your gums. There are 4 things that can be done to help eliminate irritation of the gums. First, after you apply the teeth whitening gel in the mouthpiece, hold the mouthpiece in your mouth with one hand and wipe the gel that seeps onto your gums with a tissue or a Q-tip. Make sure that you are not using too much gel. If a lot of gel is seeping onto the gums, you are using too much gel. Second, cut the mouthpiece so it is 1mm to 2mm above the gum lines. Third, buy some Vaseline intensive care for your lips and apply this to your gums prior to whitening your teeth. This will keep the whitener away from the gums and usually resolves the problems. Fourth, stop whitening your teeth for a couple of days to give time for your gums to recuperate. The longer you whiten your teeth, the more your gums adapt to the whitener and you experience less irritation of the gums.
